The Benefits of Agile,
the Needs of HW Development

MAHD Accelerator program

Introduction to a Fast Path to MAHD Success

The MAHD Accelerator Program is a fast-track solution for adopting the Modified Agile for Hardware Development (MAHD) Framework. It helps hardware teams quickly establish the skills, tools, and processes needed to deliver value within weeks.

The program includes three phases: Rapid Assessment and Preparation, where readiness is evaluated, pilot projects are chosen, and priorities are set; Learning and Practice, offering hands-on sessions to align teams, develop backlogs, and create iteration plans; and Implementation Success Support, which provides coaching, retrospectives, and resources to address challenges during execution.

With flexible virtual and onsite delivery options, teams can progress at their own pace. Participants also gain access to templates, tools, and the MAHD Mastery Zone portal for ongoing learning and support, ensuring long-term success in hardware development.

Characteristics of a Good Pilot Project

  1. Large enough to be important, but small enough to not be overwhelming.
  2. Requires multiple disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, design and SW.
  3. Has a project team of 6-20 people. Avoid large, complex teams for a first effort.
  4. Has innovation goals in at least one significant area.
  5. Early enough in development to get the full benefits of MAHD.
This last point is important.  wait until you have fully defined solution, you’ll limit taking advantages of agile and like quickly fall back into traditional waterfall methods.

Assess and Preparation

This phase ensures your team is set up for success by assessing readiness, defining project goals, and aligning the team to ensure smooth adoption of the MAHD Framework.

  • Readiness Assessment: Evaluate team concerns, current challenges and project priorities.
  • Pilot Selection: Choose projects with high potential for success and learning.
  • Change Management: Begin aligning roles, mindset, and expectations.
  • Defining Roles: Guidance to define and translate roles and responsibilities.
  • Pre-Training Assignments: Teams complete initial tasks in preparation for training success.

Learn and Practice

In this phase, your team gains a hands-on understanding of the MAHD Framework through interactive learning and real-world application.

  • Foundations of Agile and MAHD: Understand the core principles and practices of MAHD.
  • Project Initiation: Develop user stories, solution skeletons, Focus Matrix outcomes, initial IPAC Iteration Plans iteration plans and backlog structures.
  • Hands-On Practice: Apply MAHD methods to real projects during training sessions to get your pilot project up and running with agile methods optimized for hardware.
  • Efficient Execution: Teams get step-by-step guidance to execute the project to realize Agile benefits.

Execute and Refine

This phase provides ongoing support and coaching to ensure long-term success and continuous improvement.

  • Coaching Sessions: A coaching roadmap is developed to get targeted advice and learn new topics for key roles and teams to overcome challenges and refine processes.
  • Retrospectives: Review progress and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Resource Access: Receive detailed templates, the MAHD Playbook and other resources including access to the MAHD Mastery Zone learning portal.
  • Email Support: Resolve questions quickly with expert guidance.
